Why the fuck couldn’t I keep my mouth shut?

“I’m sorry, Ryder…but it’s too much, too soon. I can’t do this.” Looking freaked out, she tried to shove me off her, though I wasn’t going anywhere. “Please…you need to let me go. This will never work.”

“I’m not letting you go, Sadie. I can’t. That’s just not going to fucking happen. And it will work, because the two of us…we’re meant to be together.” The last thing I needed was to have her running off this close to a full moon. She’d get herself killed.

But there was more to it than just that. I needed her in my life. She was my fated mate, and without her I’d be nothing but miserable. And not just run-of-the-mill miserable, but rather the kind of miserable that felt as if my very soul had been shattered. Now that I knew she was my mate, I had to be with her.

“You don’t get a say in this. And if you could please remove your forever-hard cock from my body, it’d be greatly appreciated.” When she shoved me this time around, I rolled off her, not wanting to make things worse.

“I do get a say in this when it comes to your safety, and I’m not going to have you getting yourself killed just because you’re scared of getting into a serious relationship.” I knew she was dealing with a lot, but I needed her to understand what she meant to me. “You’re all that matters, Sadie. And you can lie to yourself all you want, but I know you feel it too. This thing between us is fate.”

“I don’t care how intense it feels, because I’m not interested in any sort of relationship. Not with you, not with anyone. I’m just not ready to deal with what that means emotionally.” Her aqua eyes shimmered with tears, making me wonder if this was, to an extent, about her not being able to get pregnant.

“Sadie…seeing you upset is killing me.” I reached over and brushed away the single tear that had escaped and was rolling down her cheek. “I know you’ve had one shock after another—and I know you have other worries and concerns, but I swear, the only thing that matters to me is that you’re happy and by my side.”

“How can you say that? I saw the look in your eyes when I told you I’d likely never be able to have a family. It was as if I’d sucker-punched you.” A fresh wave of tears streamed down her cheeks, and I couldn’t imagine her heartache. “I just can’t deal with it right now. It’s all still too raw.”

“I’m not going to lie and tell you that it didn’t come as a shock, but you’re all the family I need. You and my pack.” And though I didn’t want to give her any false hope, I couldn’t help but wonder if Juno might be able to heal her infertility problems.

“Why? Because I’m supposedly your mate?” She scoffed at me with a shake of her head.
